BNEC - WUDC Mexico 2018

Once again, BNEC Debate become one of the best in the world. The World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) held their annual event early in this year. Mexico WUDC 2018 is the largest Debate competition in the world with over 400 teams from more than 90 countries participating. The event’s prestige is shown by the title that the winner will hold, “World Champions”. As the biggest debate championship, it successfully held annually since 1981, and now, it gathers students from prestigious universities around the world, with 6 out of 7 continents participated in this event.

BNEC, representing BINUS University, sent their team (Pandu Noer Umaro and Vici Indrati Milenia) again this year to this event. There were about 10 teams sent from several debate powerhouse in Indonesia, including BINUS, University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and several other universities. For this several years, we always sent a team in order to bring back the “World Champions” title for BINUS. Every year, our talents train intensively for months with the famous coach Ms. Novel, one of our main key in becoming Indonesia Debate powerhouse.

The event started on December 27, 2017 and ended on January 4, 2018. It started with Inauguration Dinner and workshops. The competition started with 9 rounds of preliminary to decide on the breaking category. We were placed on the English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) category. Managed to break into the Semi-Final means that we performed better than the teams from other countries. On the Semi-Final of EFL category, BINUS were competing against 4 other teams, including one from UI. Winning the round would make us enter the WUDC EFL Final.

Getting one step closer to become the champion of EFL category and one of the best Debate team in the world, BINUS Team competed with 2 Mexico teams and a Spain team. The final was tough and fierce, and even though we had given everything, but apparently this year isn’t ours as Universidad Pontificia Comillas from Spain were announced as the winner of EFL category. The title of World Champions itself, right now are on the hands of Danny DeBois and Archie Hall representing Harvard University. We might not win the tournament, but all those intense training were paid off by once again bringing BINUS name to the worldwide and come back home with the title of becoming the finalist.
